A weekly update of Councils events and happenings. Voluntary Conservation Agreements - Wallendbeen and Stockinbingal Cemeteries Council in conjunction with the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) operates a voluntary conservation agreement at the Stockinbingal and Wallendbeen cemeteries. Joint inspections were undertaken last week with the NPWS rangers and specialist botanist being very happy with the range of remnant species of both flora and fauna living in the two areas. A population of Grey Crowned Babblers, a vulnerable bird species, was noted at Stockinbingal. Nests of the Superb Parrot, another vulnerable bird species which has just commenced its breading season were noted in the Wallendbeen Cemetery. Regeneration of endemic eucalypts, acacias and the other understorey species is also evident. Timber Removal at the Wallendbeen Cemetery Unfortunately a person or persons unknown have removed hollow standing timer from Wallendbeen Cemetery recently. This is not only in contravention of the conservation management plan but, more importantly, removes valuable nesting sites for the Superb Parrot and other native parrot species. NPWS will be providing further signage in the next few months for posting at both sites to further inform residents about these conservation areas. Council would appreciate any information on timber removal from either cemetery. Work is currently underway throughout the Shire to control noxious weeds along road shoulders. An important result of this weed control program is preventing the establishment and spread of weeds introduced to the Shire from weed seeds dropped by cars, stock transport vehicles, droving stock etc. Roadside weeds can not only spread rapidly from one local government area to another but also invade our native bush and agricultural land subsequently requiring costly control and remediation. Council's Road Safety Officer will be conducting a free, 2 hour Learner Driver workshop for parents and supervising drivers on 11th September at 6pm in the Stephen Ward Rooms. Please contact Council on 02 6940 2100 as bookings ARE ESSENTIAL. Green Waste Kerb Side Collection The next kerb side collection of Green Waste ONLY will take place between 22nd to 26th September 2008. Green Waste is to be placed neatly stacked, without obstruction to pedestrians, in front of your residence (not laneways) this week and will be collected on the same day as your normal garbage service for this week only. For further details please contact Nikki Ricketts on 6940 2117. General Works General maintenance is being undertaken as required on the bitumen roads and streets. Gravel road maintenance has been completed on Back Brawlin Road which included gravel resheeting a section from Nashs lane onwards. Other resheeting work has commenced on the formed section of Lismore Road. Council has been fortunate to secure some funding from the Rural Fire Service to undertake minor touch up work along the Lismore Fire trail. This work will only concentrate on the worst areas and should be completed within a couple of days. Replacement kerb and gutter is being carried out in the laneway behind the IGA supermarket and at the corner of Thompson and Mackay Streets. Murray Street Carpark With the operation of the Murray Street carpark, residents are reminded that entry to the carpark from Parker Lane is only allowable from the northern end (Adams Street) and exit from the carpark is only into Murray Street. Council has observed evidence of entry from the southern end of Parker Lane and exit into Parker Lane. For the sake of safety of users of the carpark, please ensure the correct entry and exits are used. Residents are reminded that Council elections will take place on Saturday 13th September 2008 and voting is compulsory. Pre-polling can now be done at Council offices between 8.30am and 5.00pm until Friday 12th September 2008. Contact details |
